COMPOSITION:
Each tablet contains EFAVIRENZ 600mg.
USE: Treatment
of HIV - 1 infections in combination with at least two other antiretroviral
agents.
Also has some activity against HEPATITIS B virus and HERPES viruses.
MECHANISM OF ACTION: As
a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, EFFAVEK has activity
against HIV-1 by binding to reverse transcriptase. It consequently
blocks the RNA-dependent and
DNA-dependant DNA polymerase activities including HIV -1 replication.
It does not require intracellular phosphorylaion for antiviral activity.
DIETARY CONSIDERATIONS:It
should be taken on an empty stomach.
PATIENT INFORMATION: Take
EFFAVEK exactly as prescribed; Report all side effects; Do not alter
dose or discontinue without consulting doctor; Many medications (otc,
herbals/supplements,
prescription products) cannot be taken with EFFAVEK; May cause dizziness,
drowsiness, impaired concentration, delusions or depression; Taking
at bedtime may minimize these
effects; Caution in performing potentially hazardous tasks such as
operating machinery or driving;
DO not get pregnant; Avoid high-fat meals.
